In the final week of the January transfer window, we saw a single report from Portugal saying Newcastle United had made an attempt to sign Matheus Nunes from Sporting.
Newspaper O Jogo was the one who broke the news claiming the Magpies wanted the midfielder on a loan deal with an obligatory buying clause of £10m.
Things went completely silent for a while, and it turns out this bid is now backed up by Record.
Their story is actually about the growth in the Brazilian’s value. They recall that in May 2020, Sporting president Frederico Varandas said Matheus Nunes would soon pay off the club’s investment in manager Ruben Amorim.
And apparently he was right, because according to Record now, Newcastle made a €13m offer for the player, which arrived at Alvalade ‘about two weeks ago’.
It’s said Sporting turned down the bid both because they didn’t want to weaken the squad and because they believe his price can still grow.
Nunes is the man of the moment after scoring Sporting’s winning goal against Benfica on Monday night. He’s protected by a release clause of €60m.
