A few days ago The Mirror claimed Newcastle United are interested in German midfielder Lewis Holtby. The Hamburg player has experience playing in the Premier League, after his time with Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham.
Holtby arrived at Tottenham in 2013, but didn’t make a huge impact, and after loans at Fulham and Hamburger SV, he was bought permanently by the German club.
According to The Mirror, Holtby could be available for just £5m and that makes him very attractive to Newcastle United. Despite being a key for Hamburg last season and being one of their most reliable players on the pitch, Holtby could be available for a summer transfer.
According to Kicker journalist Sebastian Wolff, Hamburg could be open to Holtby leaving, due to his high salary, along with other top earners Aaron Hunt and Pierre Lasogga. This could give Newcastle United a chance to come in for the Holtby, as Rafael Benítez continues to strengthen his squad ahead of the next season.
Kicker also writes, Holtby “sends positive signals at the moment”. Gisdol has no complaints about his work ethic, and adds he works hard in the training. However, Gisdol could still agree to Holtby’s sale before the window closes, which is a boost to any Newcastle United interest.
