After selling Kyle Walker to Manchester City for a record fee last month, Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is in the market to find a right back this summer.
According to a claim in the German media the Tottenham boss may have the answer in Germany U21 international Jeremy Toljan, who has a contract with Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.
These claims have been batted between the English and German media for a week or so now, but that was almost entirely due to the Portuguese press reporting Benfica had withdrawn from the Toljan race, on assumption he’d sign for Tottenham. Since then the Portuguese media seem to have forgotten ever mentioning that, but the rumours have continued regardless.
Toljan had a successful end of the season, when he was part of Germany’s Euro U21 title winning team. The youngster recently returned from holiday, but it seems he may not stay in Germany for much longer, with Tottenham and Benfica keen on the defender.
The youngster’s defensive solidity and speed seems to be attractive to Tottenham, but the Premier League club will face competition from Benfica for the 22 year old, largely due to suggestions he could be available for a few million.
However, Express.de say Tottenham have ‘more financial arguments’ than Benfica, and the London club could convince Toljan to join them over the Portuguese champions.
His club Hoffenheim could also be willing to let him go if they receive a reasonable offer. Assuming Mauricio Pochettino interest is correct, and the price suggested in Germany is anywhere near right, this is a great opportunity for a cheap deal… has anyone told Daniel Levy?
