Currently at Fulham, Aleksandar Mitrovic made his first steps in English football at Newcastle United back in 2015 after the Magpies paid around £16.5m to acquire the Serbian from Anderlecht.
His time at St James’ Park wasn’t a huge success, scoring just 17 goals in 72 appearances, 25 of which came in the Championship.
Despite this, a successful loan to Fulham during the second half of last season led the Cottagers to pay Newcastle just over £18m for the now 24-year-old, who has scored 11 goals in 34 appearances in the Premier League this year.
That should have been the last the Magpies heard of Mitrovic, having managed to somehow make a profit on him, yet news emerging from Belgium suggests otherwise.
According to a number of Belgian outlets, including DH, police have raided the Anderlecht training ground on Wednesday morning as they investigate suspected money laundering and criminal association.
The newspaper say that ‘at the heart’ of the investigation is the transfer of Aleksandar Mitrovic from the Jupiler Pro League side to Newcastle in which Pini Zahavi and Fali Ramadani were involved.
As well as Anderlecht’s training ground, the company One Goal Management, who specialises in football transfers, has also been raided.
All in all, five separate raids took place on Wednesday morning.
