Loaning Jetro Willems from Eintracht Frankfurt, Newcastle United looked like they’d finally managed to find a potential long-term solution for a problematic role.
Matt Ritchie had to start playing there to help out, and the Dutchman provided a breath of fresh air with attacking prowess until his serious injury, which is when Danny Rose came in to plug the gap.
Newcastle decided to let Willems leave once the loan deal ended in June, meaning they now have to find themselves a new player in the role.
That’s where Sassuolo’s Rogério comes in, and Corriere dello Sport think there’s active movement from the Magpies’ end for the Brazilian.
Arriving from Juventus for £5.3m after a successful loan, the 22-year-old missed a good chunk of the campaign with a meniscal injury, but swiftly returned for some regular performances at the back end of the season.
There’s no mention of the price, but Corriere explain Newcastle are ‘ready to be serious’ for Rogério this summer, clearly desperate to address a difficult position to find serious talent out.
We’ll have to wait for a bit more detail, but the idea is very much there.
