In their efforts to bolster their midfield in the winter market, Newcastle United looked at Napoli’s Fabián Ruiz. Unable to take him away from the Serie A side in January, the Tyneside club are expected to return for the 25-year-old after this season.
The Spain international’s contract lasts until 2023 and the Serie A side have so far not made progress in their efforts to tie him down to a new deal. This has resulted in him being linked to other clubs, including the Magpies.
Corriere dello Sport journalist Antonio Giordano is of the belief the former Real Betis man is in his final months at the Naples club. Fabián is not lacking suitors as Giordano claims Eddie Howe’s side are among those who ‘like’ the player.
The journalist made these claims during Canal 8’s Ne Parliamo il Martedì, relayed by Tutto Napoli.
“These are Fabian’s last two months at Napoli. In two months, an auction will be triggered around the Spaniard, it is inevitable. In April, he will be 26 years old. In a year, his [contract] will expire and there seems to be no possibility of renewal,” Giordano said.
“He wants to leave, the club has a duty to sell and whoever wants to buy, they have the right and the duty to believe in it and to come and make a serious offer.
“He will become the prized piece of the market if he scores another goal like that against Roma, which is part of the masterpieces, and the performances of the first four months of this season.
“Guardiola, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Newcastle and Arsenal like him.”
Newcastle ‘like’ Fabián and AS on Tuesday stated they offered to improve his wages three times. However, this was not enough for the Magpies to convince the midfielder and they still have work to do if they want to bring Fabián to St James’ Park in the summer.
