Prior to the Champions League clash between Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain, a fight broke out in Boulogne-Billancourt when a group of Magpies supporters were attacked while enjoying a drink in a restaurant.
The clash made the news in England, with it reported that it was ultras of the Ligue 1 side who had started it all, and that has been corroborated in France.
RMC Sport spoke to one of the bar staff present on the night, who described what happened to the Newcastle fans that night, making it clear they were just minding their own business when the incident took place.
They said: “The Newcastle fans arrived for around 10.30-11pm. We thought we were going to close and they just turned up. Then, those who claim to be ultras, who definitely are not ultras nor Paris Saint-Germain fans in my eyes, arrived between 11.30pm and midnight. They were wandering the street, there were already 20 of them.
“As soon as they heard Newcastle chants, they immediately turned up at the restaurant and came for trouble. In my head, it all happened in five minutes, all really quickly. I was pouring a beer, looked up, saw there were flares, beers flying, broken glasses.”
In reality, the staff member reckons the incident lasted around 20 minutes, and isn’t quite sure how the supposed Paris Saint-Germain fans found the ‘projectiles’ to attack their Newcastle counterparts.
On the pitch, Newcastle nearly pulled off an improbable win over Luis Enrique’s men, but a last-minute penalty, converted by Kylian Mbappé, prevented the Magpies from leaving the French capital with all three points, leaving them on the verge of elimination.
Their only hope to qualify now rests entirely on them beating AC Milan while hoping that Paris Saint-Germain fail to beat Borussia Dortmund.
