Newcastle United could be given the chance to sign January target Marcos Senesi for less than the €20m it would have taken in the winter window.
That’s according to agent Henk Timmer, who says the player’s contract situation means he could now be available on the cheap.
The Magpies were linked with Senesi throughout January, with him regularly named as one of the options they were looking at to bolster their defence.
Ultimately a move didn’t happen, with Newcastle focusing all of their efforts on Diego Carlos and Sven Botman before eventually signing Dan Burn from Brighton when they could get neither of those players.
Further strengthening their defence is likely to be a target for the summer, and Senesi could be one of those they look at after they were ‘in the picture’ for his signing in January.
At that point, it was believed they would have to pay around €20m for his signature, but according to Timmer, they could now get him for less than that.
“He still has one year left on his contract, so €20m is not something Feyenoord will achieve. If you are between €12-15m, you are doing very well,” Voetbal Primeur report the agent saying.
Whether Newcastle do return with any force for Senesi remains to be seen, but there’s every chance he’ll be a name on their list.
The likely outcome is that Eddie Howe and co will try to get either one of Botman or Carlos again but should they prove to be too costly, Senesi could be the low-cost option that will allow them to spend their fortunes elsewhere.
