On Tuesday, the Italian media continued to push the idea that Lorenzo Insigne was a target For Newcastle United.
The Italy international is currently in an end of contract situation at Napoli, and with the Serie A club lowballing him with their renewal offer, the forward is asking himself some questions.
There’s no denying that, in an ideal world, he would end his career in Naples, but we live in a far from ideal world, and so the option of Newcastle and that of a move to Canada have reportedly presented themselves.
It’s had been reported that Toronto had made an offer to the player, ‘putting tempting figures on the table’, according to Napoli Più, seemingly relaying La Repubblica.
However, ‘money is not always everything’ and therefore Insigne ‘decided to decide the offer of the Canadian club’, as he ‘wants to continue playing in Europe, in one of the top leagues’.
As things stand, his renewal talks with Napoli ‘has completely stopped’, meaning a ‘free transfer at the end of the season is not excluded’.
That’s where Newcastle come in, because ‘the ambitions of Bin Salman should not be underestimated’, as the Magpies have ‘set their sights on Insigne and can make him a very important contract offer’.
The biggest issue, since money isn’t everything, is that Eddie Howe’s new club are currently in a relegation scrap in the Premier League, and most certainly will not be playing Champions League football next season, something Insigne is likely to want to do.
It could be that, should no one else come forward, Newcastle’s offer is the best on the table at the end of the day, but we’re not there yet, and this is likely to be a story that will continue for a while yet.
