Newcastle United have identified AS Monaco’s Sofiane Diop as a target this summer.
The 22-year-old has mainly operated on the left wing, but was also used in various other positions last season and produced nine goals and seven assists.
Media Foot state Newcastle think of Diop as they ‘want to strengthen’ their attack. Lyon have also positioned themselves for the player, but haven’t taken a concrete step so far to sign him.
The Magpies, on the other hand, have already made contact with the Frenchman’s agent. They are aware of the fee the Ligue 1 side will request to carry out his signing and the salary the player will demand.
This should come as encouragement for Newcastle, but it isn’t clear whether they will return for him after holding talks with Diop’s agent.
On the topic of Diop, Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell recently said: “Sofiane came back from vacation with a muscle injury, which is a shame because everyone knows how important preparation is at the start of the season.
“He showed a lot of qualities, especially during his first season at the club. He is a hopeful France U21 international who can gain a little more regularity and who will have the chance to apply for a starting place during the year.”
