Last season, Coventry City fans got pretty used to seeing Victor Gyokeres celebrating goals by placing his hands over his mouth.
The striker kept up that good form since joining Sporting in the summer, and as he continued with that celebration… the Portuguese media went after it.
They found Coventry City player Josh Eccles telling the English media earlier this year that it had something to do with the movie character Hannibal Lecter, with Gyokeres supposedly eating defenders.
Gyokeres was now asked about that celebration at the national team camp. He’s quoted by Fotboll Skanalen claiming his former Coventry City teammate was actually wrong.
“I saw it. There have been many guesses. That one, Batman and everything,” said Gyokeres.
“No one has guessed correctly yet.”
The striker was asked to finally reveal it, but refused once again.
“I don’t know. It’s kind of funny, actually. When everyone asks. Maybe I’ll tell you someday, but not today.
“I don’t really know. But it was fun to come up with my own target gesture and I’ve had to do it a few times. It was a bit boring to just slide on my knees.”
Gyokeres had 22 goals and 12 assists in 50 appearances for Coventry City last season, and that drew a big race for his signing last summer.
Sporting spent €20m to bring him to Lisbon, and that investment was apparently worth it so far, as he has 12 goals and four assists in 14 appearances in his first months at the club.
