Strongly linked with a move to Espanyol as the La Liga club were looking for a marquee centre-back for the coming season, Federico Fazio seemingly made the decision to join AS Roma instead.
The Argentinean was on the fringes at Tottenham, and a move elsewhere was needed, dealing a blow to the small Spanish club, who seemed well poised to get a loan deal sorted.
However, Sport on Wednesday explain that despite this setback, Espanyol have bounced back straight away and move onto another target, who was recently released by a Premier League club.
Brought in by Manuel Pellegrini during the Chilean’s time in charge at Manchester City, Martin Demichelis was let go towards the end of June when his contract with the club ran out.
The veteran centre-back is therefore in need of a move if he is to play football regularly, and has allegedly already met with Espanyol club representatives to work on a deal while he was in Barcelona.
The gathering was just for an overview of the situation i.e. whether or not he would be interested to come, and no decision has been taken.
Espanyol’s new manager, Quique Sanchez Flores, knows the player well, and is looking to bring experience to his rather young defence.
This could be a match made in heaven.
