Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong has been the priority target for Manchester United and their manager, Erik ten Hag, this summer. The English club have not managed to seal the deal so far.
On Sunday, Sport suggested the Red Devils are ready to offer a package to the 25-year-old that will help him recover the deferred wages owed by the La Liga side. That seems unlikely.
‘Maximum pressure on De Jong’ is written in bold on the front page of Sport. It’s also said Manchester United will ‘start the final bid’ to try to close the midfielder’s transfer this week.
In other words, it is the ‘key week’ for the Netherlands international’s future. His exit can help the Catalan club finance more signings this summer. The newspaper adds the former Ajax man’s sale is ‘far from ruled out’, which could give hope to the English club
It’s claimed Ten Hag’s side are ‘going to bid’ for De Jong and will try to convince him to join them in the current window.
The Dutchman needs convincing because he isn’t clear of making a switch to Old Trafford, due to the lack of Champions League football. In addition to this, he also feels the Premier League side’s project is a ‘real mystery’, despite Ten Hag’s arrival.
Time will tell whether Manchester United and Ten Hag can convince De Jong to join them.
