Manchester United’s strategy for signings is today criticised in the Dutch media.

The words are brought in a column written by Bert van Marwijk on De Telegraaf. There, the former manager had been speaking about the importance that scouting has at big clubs, claiming Ajax haven’t been doing very well.

The advisor explained that scouts aren’t needed for famous players, as it’s easy to get aware of their success, as the observers work to find out footballers who aren’t known yet. That’s how the Dutch side had been working in the past few years, having  the strategy more recently.

So speaking of bad examples, Marwijk brought Manchester United to the conversation. He claimed that despite the many signings the Red Devils made in the summer transfer window, it’s hard to say the club’s scouting department have a big job to identify those targets.

“Look at Manchester United, where there is also a snap policy. If you’ve got your act together, you don’t have to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester at 37,” he said (via Ajax Showtime).

” It is now becoming a bit more normal, but that is mainly thanks to Erik ten Hag. He said: we will get Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia and Antony. Those names really don’t come from the scouting there either.’

Manchester United spent €240m in signings this summer, and the Red Devils indeed brought no surprises to the squad. Perhaps Erik ten Hag is someone who could change that strategy in the future.
