Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has told Boca Juniors he won’t be joining them as he’s chosen to go to Barcelona.
That’s according to TyC Sports, who cover the striker’s future and how he’s rejected an advance from the Argentine side.
Cavani has found himself somewhat on the sidelines at Old Trafford in recent months after the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.
His contract is set to expire in the summer, but it’s looking increasingly likely he will leave before then, with Barcelona keen on him as a low-cost option to bolster their forward line.
They’re in desperate need of a new striker after Sergio Aguero was forced to retire due to a heart problem.
A deal is being worked on for Manchester City’s Ferran Torres, but Cavani is another option, and it seems they’ve won the race.
TyC explain that Boca were also keen and contacted the Manchester United striker to try to convince him to join them.
He ‘rejected the offer’ though because he has made ‘his next destination official‘ and elected to go to Barcelona to replace Aguero, something he made clear to El Xeneize when he ‘discarded’ their offer.
It came as a major blow for the Argentine side, who are focused on the 2022 Copa Libertadores and were planning to make him their ‘star reinforcement’.
Negotiations are now underway for him to head to the Nou Camp, with a departure from Manchester United planned for January rather than next summer when his contract comes to an end.
