Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani are currently the two senior strikers at Manchester United and the duo have failed to be consistent this season.
The Portuguese forward has scored only once in the league in 2022, while the 35-year-old has struggled with multiple injuries since he arrived at Old Trafford in 2020.
Cavani is out of contract in June and Ronaldo, who turned 37 last month, has struggled to shine. The situation with the duo could force the Red Devils to look for a new striker in the summer.
Benfica star Darwin Núñez has been pushed forward as one of the targets for United, who have already scouted the 22-year-old in action for the Primeira Liga club. Traspasos in Uruguay reported last month that the Manchester club are the favourites to sign the ex-Almería man.
Fast forward to Tuesday and Record from Portugal provides us a fresh update on the frontman, who has scored 25 goals and registered two assists across all competitions this season.
Benfica set a €60m price tag for the Uruguay international in January and received offers close to that figure. However, they resisted approaches made for Núñez in the winter market.
The Eagles consider the figure they demanded in the last window seems to be ‘modest’, given that the player continues to shine and has a €150m release clause.
When talking about the South American’s present suitors, Manchester United get a mention as they have joined other European clubs in the race to sign Núñez.
Although the attacker has a €150m clause, Record adds Benfica will set a new valuation for him for the summer transfer window. The newspaper doesn’t mention the figure, but do state that if it’s met, then the Portuguese club will allow their star to leave after this campaign.
Manchester United are interested in Núñez and if they were to meet the demands that will be set by Benfica, then a deal can be carried out.
