Someone is putting effort into pushing transfer claims around Andre Onana.
The Ajax goalkeeper, who spent time in Barcelona’s academy earlier in his career, has been popping up in transfer stories around Europe, with PSG the club most often linked.
Monday’s edition of De Telegraaf says the French champions, Manchester United and Tottenham are all ‘concrete’ for the player.
All three clubs have contacted his agent Albert Botines, to let him know of their transfer interest. That would make it seem pretty clear the claims are either coming from the player’s camp or the Ajax side of a potential deal.
Ajax would be looking for a transfer fee around €40-50m for the 23 year old, so there’s a possibility of an effort to get that amount out there.
At such a price, he would clearly be arriving at a club as first choice, and with David De Gea’s future looking pretty secure after his Manchester United extension, the claims don’t make sense.
The only way for this to work would be for De Gea to leave, and there’s always the possibility of Thibaut Courtois’ difficult relationship with Real Madrid fans and the Spanish media helping that situation.
Still, it very much feels like Manchester United have just been thrown into the mix. Even the other two clubs aren’t especially in need of a new goalkeeper.
