In the run up to the World Cup, one of the stories revolving around Argentina’s squad was the fitness of Sergio Romero.
Those in charge of the country’s national team made a decision that Romero wouldn’t be fit enough to go to Russia, with the Manchester United back-up goalkeeper suffering from a knee injury.
That decision didn’t go down very well and the footballer’s wife, Eliana Guercio, took to social media to rant.
“The injury occurred in the game against Spain,” she tweeted. “Sergio will have a clean where they remove a loose small part, and with a knee that has nothing broken the recovery takes two weeks to be fit. But private interests are worth more than national team for some.”
She later added, seemingly more angry: ‘Lies, lies, lies’
Argentina’s medical team turned out to be right and Romero wasn’t ready for preseason and was still carrying an injury issue as the campaign started.
Romero has explained the whole thing left a ‘bad taste’ and that’s why his specific future goal is to make sure he goes to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

TyC Sports, Manchester United’s second choice stopper said: “I am going to make the greatest effort to get to Qatar, that is my goal apart from the Copa America next year, I want to get to Qatar because I was left with a bad taste because of what happened with Russia.”
Romero is 31 years of age, he has a contract at Old Trafford lasting until June 2021, with an option of a further year extension. Should he wish to be first choice for Argentina at the Qatar tournament then he may be best advised to seek first team football elsewhere.
Even before the injury, there had been doubts expressed over Romero’s position and whether Argentina should look to someone who plays more regularly.
