On Wednesday, we covered Spanish newspaper Marca speaking about Manchester City interest in Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo.
It was claimed Pep Guardiola’s side see the 26-year-old as an alternative to Brighton & Hove Albion’s Marc Cucurella, and given their struggle to sign the Seagulls’ player, that could be a plausible idea.
The story from Marca claimed Benfica set a €20m price tag for Grimaldo, but as we get to read the Portuguese media today, it turns out the player may be a lot cheaper than that.
It’s newspaper Record who cover the story. They apparently know nothing about Manchester City interest in the Spaniard, always quoting the first report.
But they do know a lot about Grimaldo’s situation at Benfica. And according to their information, the Eagles are willing to let him go for between €5m and €7m.
The reason he’s so cheap is that his contract expires in less than a year. He’d already been heading towards the exit door since the end of last season, due to a bad relationship with the club and fans.
Regarding Manchester City, Record claims that the club are still to make any contact with Benfica or with Grimaldo’s representatives, so the interest can only be in the early stages.
