On Thursday Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf published a big article on Newcastle United’s interest in Nicolai Jorgensen.
They said Newcastle’s attempts for the Feyenoord player are ‘not yet taken seriously’, largely because the Premier League club are said to have offered €14.5m, which is some way from Feyenoord’s asking price of €25m.
The Dutch club don’t feel under any pressure to sell and Jorgensen hasn’t let the transfer interest, which he’s aware of, send him crazy, so Feyenoord are comfortable to hold out for what they want or keep the player at least for the rest of the season.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst doesn’t sound quite so comfortable about the situation.
Quoted by Voetbal Zone, the Feyenoord manager explained: “I know there is interest… You are always dependent on the market. Especially when an English club is interested it can go fast.”
Newcastle United aren’t like some other Premier League clubs, their current ownership situation makes it hard to back Rafael Benitez to the level he’d like to be. But to make an offer of €14.5m is big by Newcastle’s current standards and shows a real keenness to sign the player.
Keen enough to go to €20m or more? Time will very quickly tell.
