Offered to a bunch of Ligue 1 clubs, with Bordeaux the keenest, Aleksandar Mitrovic still remains at Newcastle and is still looking for game time ahead of the World Cup.

Marseille and Nantes are said to have said no to the offer, as the Magpies were asking for around €12m, and a return to Anderlecht appears to be complicated too.

According to DH in Belgium, the Serbian striker would be happy to go back to his former club for the next few months in order to get some minutes (and hopefully some goals) under his belt, but there’s a big obstacle standing in his way: Hein Vanhaezebrouck.

The Anderlecht manager is said to be against the forward’s return, and that’s probably because he’s already stuck with Lukasz Teodorczyk in the target-man-who-can’t-really-score-this-season department.

Adding one more to his squad could cause more problems than solutions.

It seems few clubs are keen on gambling on Mitrovic, so it could be up to Benitez to try and make it work going forward.

Either that, or the 24-year-old runs the risk of being unfit ahead of the biggest tournament of his career.
