It’s not unkind to say Rafael Benitez didn’t exactly get a huge welcome as Everton manager.
Following Carlo Ancelotti’s exit from Goodison Park, as the Italian returned to Real Madrid, the Toffees were forced into the market for a new manager.
That they went from one target to another and ended up with Benitez didn’t really show that a lot of planning had been going on to cover Everton for the eventuality of Ancelotti leaving.
Benitez won a lot of fans over with some early promise, and since then things have gone sour. The Merseyside club currently find themselves 13th in the Premier League and there’s not a lot of optimism around the place right now.
Inevitably there’ll be rumours about the Spaniard’s future, and that gives the opportunity for claims of a new man coming in.
Kasper Hjulmand, Denmark manager, has now been named in both Spain and Italy as a possible replacement.
Spain’s Fichajes report Hjulmand is the ‘main candidate’ for Everton, and Italy’s Calciomercato say they’re thinking of him.
Given Denmark have qualified for the Qatar World Cup, and the impressive style in which they did so, it would be a surprise for Hjulmand to leave all that behind.
