Before he became the player Manchester United decided to buy from Benfica, Victor Lindelöf played for Västerås SK in Sweden, where the Portuguese side bought him from for around £3m.
The centre-back made 40 appearances for the Swedish club before his switch to Liga NOS, and will always be the place he grew up and developed in as a youngster.
That’s why, now that he’s at home in Sweden during the Covid-19 pandemic, the player got in touch with his former side to see if he could train with them in order to maintain his fitness.
VLT were the first to report it, and Aftonbladet followed up by talking to the club’s sporting director Robin Blommé about the situation.
He said: “It was a surprise. Nobody was really prepared. The most important thing in these times is that his health is in good condition and that he is doing well. Which he is.”
Blommé was keen to remind everyone what the Manchester United defender means to Västerås, and made it clear the 25-year-old was ‘more than welcome’ to use the facilities at the club, and it was ‘fun’ for the current crop of players ‘to have such an inspiring player’ in their midst.
As for whether he will continue to train there, the director refused to comment further, but Aftonbladet state VLT reported the player ‘will continue to work’ at Västerås ‘sporadically’ in the future.
For those wondering what the training consists of and whether or not Lindelöf is at risk, Blommé tried to put everyone’s mind at ease by telling SVT: “We have certain directives and restrictions from the Public Health Authority. After all, it should be minimal with time indoors and we usually do bike training indoors but now we have put it outdoors.
“We have a closed arena to minimise the spread of infection. Then it is about individual hygiene and collectively reducing the number of people around the team.”
