After spending eight years at Ajax’s academy, Matthijs de Ligt made his first team debut in 2016 and has been a regular inclusion in his side’s starting lineup since the start of the last season.
Catalan newspaper Sport reports that Manchester United are one of the clubs looking at the option of signing the 19-year-old, along with Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona and Juventus.
The 20-time English champions have had a difficult start to this campaign and Jose Mourinho is planning for a ‘winning project’ next season, for which he wants the Eredivisie star to be the ‘leader’ in his side’s back four.
It’s claimed that Manchester United will ‘bid hard’ for the player and are expected to challenge other interested clubs for De Ligt’s signature next summer.
The Dutchman is represented by Mino Raiola, who also manages Paul Pogba and if the recent reports are to be believed, the agent wants to take the midfielder away from United, due to the latter’s breakdown in relationship with Mourinho.
If there is any truth in these claims regarding the Frenchman’s situation at his club, it may be difficult for the Old Trafford club and Mourinho to secure the services of the Ajax centre-back.
