Manchester City’s interest in Stefan De Vrij isn’t exactly anything new, but it’s been, by far, the least documented of all.

The first time we saw anything about it was back towards the end of February, when Il Tempo revealed Pep Guardiola was intrigued by the prospect of signing the Dutchman on a free, which would see him add some depth and experience to the position for very little.

Considering Eliaquim Mangala and Vincent Kompany’s futures at the club seem short term (for very different reasons), bringing in an extra defender wouldn’t hurt anyone, and that interest appears to still exist, even if Gazzetta dello Sport believe it to be futile.

According to the Italian newspaper over the weekend, the Lazio defender will, come the end of the season, be joining Inter when his contract runs out, where he would partner another Manchester City target, Milan Skriniar.

This decision to stay in Serie A comes despite renewed interest from two named clubs: Barcelona and Manchester City.

It’s easy, of course, to see why De Vrij would choose Luciano Spalletti’s side, considering the options those two clubs already have for the role, and while nothing official has been announced yet, Gazzetta seem very confident they’ve got it right this time.

If Pep Guardiola really wants De Vrij, there’s potentially still a chance of getting him, but that could mean making him promises he might not be able to uphold.
