Currently the assistant manager at FC St. Gallen in Switzerland, Boro Kuzmanovic was once the manager of a small Swiss team called FC Winterthur.

He was there between 2009 and 2014, and, in the process, kickstarted the career of a recent arrival at Manchester City: Manuel Akanji.

The 27-year-old was a late acquisition for the Etihad side in the recent transfer window, arriving from Borussia Dortmund in £16m or so transfer that took a few by surprise.

He has, however, performed very well since his arrival, and was among the starters in Manchester City’s dismantling of Manchester United at the weekend, which ended 6-3.

He is also expected to keep his spot in the starting line-up going forward, and Kuzmanovic is delighted to see someone he spotted at Winterthur early do so well.

He told RSI: “He was a boy convinced of his ability, a quiet type with a great personality. I made him debut in a match against Lugano, and even thought he had hardly ever trained with the first-team, he had a great match.

“I am happy to see him on this type of stage, as I am for all the players I have managed and then find at a high level. I have seen many come through, such as Remo Freuler. It makes me proud to have represented a stage in their career and to have helped them along their path.”

Prior to his move to Manchester City, Akanji had made 158 appearances for Borussia Dortmund since transferring there from Basel in 2018, scoring four goals and assisting another two.
