Before Arsenal managed to sign fancy players like Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang this transfer window, there was a strong rumour saying the Gunners could bring an attacker in from Argentina.

Local newspapers and TV stations claimed Boca Juniors forward Cristian Pavon was a serious target for Arsene Wenger, who could activate his release clause at any moment.

Even Boca Juniors and his agent talked openly about it, but it turns out that an Arsenal offer for the 21-year-old never came, even though the interest continues to be mentioned in local outlets.

Now with the window shut, Pavon himself could have a little say on the rumour, and wasn’t afraid of telling TV channel TyC that Arsenal want him.

Asked about the interest, the forward said: “It makes me happy that Arsenal like me, but I analysed it and decided to stay, mostly because there is not much left for the World Cup.” (via AS)

It’s interesting how Pavon makes it clear that he decided to stay, as if there was a concrete offer from Arsenal to take him, even though this hasn’t been reported by the local press.

It wasn’t these quotes that made the headlines in Argentina. Pavón also claimed he ‘would rather go to the World Cup than win the Copa Libertadores’, and that made Boca Juniors fans furious with him.
