Currently second in Serie A, five points behind city rivals Milan, Inter are on course to improve from their efforts from last year.
Antonio Conte’s side are trying to keep up as best they can with Stefano Pioli’s men, but one area of the pitch that needs reinforcing in order to do that is his midfield.
There’s a number of players on his list he would like to sign, top of which is Chelsea’s N’Golo Kanté, but there’s also Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka.
The Switzerland international has been linked with a move away from the Emirates in the past, most recently when Corriere dello Sport suggested the idea of a swap between the Gunners’ midfielder and Christian Eriksen.
It seemed a bit silly, especially when you take into account the fact the Dane used to play for Tottenham, but it refuses to go away, with the same newspaper bringing it up again on Friday.
They write that ‘a midfielder will arrive in January, perhaps in an exchange of loans with Eriksen’.
Leandro Paredes and André Herrera, both at Paris Saint-Germain, are mentioned, but Corriere point out ‘look out for Xhaka in Arsenal’, suggesting he remains a viable option for Inter.
The Swiss, once the mighty key holder in his family, has seen his game time somewhat reduced since the arrival of Thomas Partey, and while he is still featuring here and there for the time being in the Ghanaian’s absence through injury, it’s fairly clear Mikel Arteta has no plans to pair them together in midfield.
Thus, a move to Inter could be a good idea for Xhaka, getting ahead of potentially sitting on the bench for extended periods of times at the Emirates.
