Liverpool have joined the chase for Genk star Paul Onuachu, according to reports.
The 26-year-old has been in stellar form for the Belgian club, scoring 35 goals and managing five assists in 41 matches in all competitions.
His goalscoring record has caught attention from European clubs, with the Reds included in the list.
That’s according to Fichajes.net, who say the Merseyside club and RB Leipzig have their eyes on the Nigeria international for next season.
Jürgen Klopp’s side and Leipzig will be ‘Sevilla’s rivals in the race’ for the Genk player.
Monchi, the sporting director of the La Liga side, is searching for a new striker in the market, preparing for the possibility of seeing Luuk de Jong or Youssef En-Nesyri leave the club this summer.
Liverpool and Leipzig have watched the player up-close when they faced Genk in the group stage of the Champions League, during the 2019/20 season.
Although he didn’t score against the Anfield club, he did enough to catch Klopp’s attention. This was confirmed by Genk technical director Dimitri De Condé at the start of this year.
“He’s a top scorer. It’s not a goal in itself to sell him on. But if he continues to perform like this… Of course, we will do everything we can to keep him. But there will be a lot of interest,” De Condé told Het Laatste Nieuws.
“Paul Onuachu will score everywhere. Also, in the Premier League. He will even be on the list of top clubs, provided they look for his type of striker to complement their core.”
“In the Champions League he played strongly against Liverpool last year, which has a fantastic defence. That was his reference game, even Jürgen Klopp said afterwards that they were having a hard time with Paul.”
