While Andrew Robertson is the undisputed number one at the left-back position under Jürgen Klopp, there isn’t much backup at the role in the German’s squad.
James Milner has been deployed there in the cup to give the Scotland international a much deserved rest, but the smart thing to do would be to spend money on a young talent who could learn from the 25-year-old.
Well, that appears to be what the Premier League club are thinking of doing, according to L’Equipe, as they have turned their attention to France, where Toulouse’s Mathieu Gonçalves has caught their eye.
According to the French newspaper, Liverpool will face competition from Juventus, who are a step ahead in their pursuit for the player.
Four meetings are said to have taken place between the Serie A side and their French counterparts since the spring, with Maurizio Sarri’s side even keen to do a deal in the summer, which never materialised.
L’Equipe explain they could come back in the summer with a renewed effort, while Liverpool, who are also looking at him, are ‘waiting to see him play full seasons’ before making a move.
It doesn’t sound like they’re in a rush to get a deal done, although it does show their intentions in recruiting someone in the position, clearly aware that one bad injury to Robertson could cause them a lot of problems.
One to keep an eye on.
