Aston Villa were credited with an interest in Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino last summer and the English club have continued to be named as an interested party for the midfielder.

Unai Emery has now made it clear that Aston Villa aren’t looking at Merino. The Villans coach revealed this during an interview with Diario Vasco and his comments are relayed by Estadio Deportivo.

Emery said the Premier League side haven’t shown interest in the Spain international since the manager arrived at Villa Park in 2022. In fact, he insists Aston Villa are not looking at any player from Real Sociedad.

“It’s all a lie. There has been no interest in signing Mikel Merino while I’ve coached Aston Villa. One makes up a rumour and launches it. People pick it up and make it their own,” he said.

“La Real have very good footballers and there could be interesting players for Aston Villa, but we have not even promoted interest in any player. In the specific case of Merino there is nothing.”

Earlier today, Sport reported Mikel Arteta is keen on signing the former Newcastle United midfielder for the Gunners and he has already called his compatriot.

Arsenal and other clubs who have shown interest in Merino will no longer have to worry about a competition from Aston Villa after Emery rubbished it all.
