For a while the Italian media have been running a low level campaign for Chelsea midfielder Jorginho to win the Ballon d’Or, as they mention this possibility as much as possible.

Besides the fact his agent is often speaking to local outlets about it, reporters add the subject to random interviews, which is the case once again this week.

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was present on Monday at the Giacinto Facchetti Awards, in Milan, and had a chat with local journalists. Among the many questions, there was the one about Jorginho.

So the 59-year-old, who had the final years of his career at Chelsea, ended up choosing another player from the Stamford Bridge side who would deserve to win the Ballon d’Or at the end of the year.

“It’s a bit like Baresi, who didn’t win despite his level,” said Gullit (via Tutto Mercato Web).

“Those who score attract more and more attention. It would be nice to see someone who attracts less attention for goals, like Kante, who deserves to win.”

Even though Jorginho and Kante won the Champions League together, the Brazilian certainly has an advantage after winning the Euros with Italy this year. Still, both should have a chance at competing against Robert Lewandowski, Lionel Messi and others.
