Over the weekend, it became clear that Leeds United had started to focus their attention on Wilfried Gnonto to bolster their attack.
The 18-year-old has impressed at Zürich since arriving at the Swiss club, earning himself four caps for Italy in the process and scoring one goal for his country.
There was talk of his club wanting around €8-10m from Leeds, but that appears to have dropped a bit, as the latest reports claim the Elland Road side are pushing for a deal of around €4-5m.
Corriere dello Sport have an update on the situation on Tuesday, explaining the striker ‘is at the centre of a negotiation with Leeds’.
Jesse Marsch’s team have ‘for a few days, decided to intensify contacts with the player’s agent to try and defeat the competition from Feyenoord’.
Leeds’ latest offer of €5m ‘will be examined in depth in the next few days, presumably by Wednesday’, even if ‘the request remains at €8m’.
That’s when Corriere point out the demands have ‘almost halved’ since June, when Zürich were asking for at least €12m + bonuses for their starlet when Hoffenheim came knocking.
This has worked in Leeds’ favour, and it could be the player is trying to force a way out, thus putting them under pressure to sell.
That’s just us speculating, but with a contract expiring in Switzerland in 2023, Zürich don’t have that much room to work with.
