Ajax forward Steven Bergwijn has admitted he’s seen rumours about a move to West Ham United but does not believe anything is happening on that front for now.
The Dutchman has been speaking to Voetbal International, relayed by Soccer News, about his situation at Ajax and the potential for a move before the January transfer window closes.
He’s been consistently linked with a move away from the Dutch club since the summer, having become something of a focus of ire amid the numerous troubles facing Ajax.
He joined them in a €31.25m deal from Tottenham in July 2022 and has managed 24 goals and 11 assists in 67 games since but has sometimes been considered a flop and some fans and journalists would be happy to see depart if the offer was right.
That appeared to be an option on the table over the last few months, with several reports making it clear that West Ham were considering a move to bring him back to the Premier League as they look to bolster David Moyes’ attacking options.
That’s yet to come to fruition this month, with West Ham spending their money elsewhere, and Bergwijn doesn’t believe anything is on the cards, even if he’d be open to the idea.
“I assume so. I have a contract until 2027, so that makes sense,” he said when asked if he’d be playing for Ajax next season.
“But of course: in football you never know what can happen. I’m only 26, so of course you keep all options open.
“One day I would like to play in the Premier League again, I think that remains the best competition. I also had a very nice time there, at Tottenham. I learned a lot, but in the end, this was better for me. Now I just play everything, at Ajax.
“I now assume that this will also be the case after the summer. Of course, I have also read about interest from West Ham United, but as far as I know, nothing is happening.”
