Ok, transfer window, you’re getting silly now.
For a few days we’ve been covering claims in Italy that Leeds United are keen on Gianluigi Buffon. The goalkeeper is a free agent having seen his contract with PSG expire, and is thought to have several options for a new club.
Corriere della Sera have pushed the Leeds idea a couple of times, which is a little eyebrow raising because they’re not one of the most rumour-hungry outlets in Italy, not by a long way.
Now things have gone a step further.
Much travelled former Italy international Marco Borriello spent some time with Francesco Totti in Spain this summer. The AS Roma legend has left his role at the Italian club, speaking out publicly against the owners.
Borriello appeared on Sky Italia on Monday evening, and TMW quote him as saying about Totti: “I know that a great leader of an English team has made him a proposal to go back to playing football. Radrizzani of Leeds? I don’t know.”
This is getting endless coverage in Italy already, with the suggestion being that it is Leeds.
For example, Fox Italia say the way Borriello answered made it seem the offer for the 42 year old is from ‘precisely the Leeds of Marcelo Bielsa’.
Tutto Roma just say the offer is from Leeds, but of course they can only assume that having judged Borriello’s reaction.
What next? See if Paolo Maldini fancies dusting his boots off?
