A couple of days ago, we relayed TuttoMercatoWeb’s quotes from Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who explained he wasn’t expecting anymore arrivals this summer, just exits.
This came off the back of a question about the Serie A club’s interest in Marten De Roon, and whether the Middlesbrough defensive midfielder could end up returning to his former club before the end of the transfer window.
Gasperini’s words certainly were good news for Boro fans, who quite like the 26-year-old, yet Gazzetta dello Sport aren’t convinced this is all over.
In fact, the Italian newspaper on Wednesday state talks are still ongoing between the two sides, with Atalanta working to bring De Roon back.
It could very well be that Gasperini is happy with his squad, and he’d be happy to go into the new season without the Dutch midfielder in the team, yet that doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t want him.
There’s a feeling the situation is basically “If he comes, great, if he doesn’t, it’s not the end of the world”.
Might as well try.
