Former Leeds United co-owner Massimo Cellino’s plan to purchase Genoa has stalled over the weekend, according to claims in Italy. Cellino is hoping to return to Italian football after three years with Leeds United.
Blasting News have today reported Cellino’s Genoa takeover attempt has cooled in the past couple of days because no financial agreement can be found. The former Leeds United chief will this week continue to hold talks with Genoa’s current owner Enrico Preziosi in order to seal a deal.
Preziosi isn’t happy his planned meetings with Cellino have been leaked to the Italian press. However, they he will continue to hold discussions, but if no agreement is found this week then Cellino may have to turn his attention back to Serie B side Brescia.
It’s claimed these latest developments have been met with a sigh of relief from Genoa fans, who aren’t too keen on Cellino purchasing their club. The Italian was a controversial figure during his time as Cagliari’s president, which continued when he bought into Leeds United in 2014.
Protests at Elland Road haven’t given Genoa fans the sort of reference they’d be looking for.
