Two months ago, Tottenham Hotspur announced that an agreement has been reached with Djurgårdens IF Fotboll for Lucas Bergvall to arrive at the Premier League side in the summer.

Former Sweden international Martin Åslund suggests a move to the Netherlands or Belgium would have suited the 18-year-old in terms of development.

Åslund was a guest on Studio Allsvenskan’s podcast, and one of the topics he discussed was the Tottenham signing, with Nyheter 24 relaying his comments.

Operating mainly as an attacking midfielder, the Sweden international has managed four goals and four assists from eight games for Djurgårdens this year.

Åslund believes James Maddison operates in the same position at Tottenham and that’s one of the factors that could make it difficult for his compatriot at Tottenham.

Nyheter 24 says the Spurs signing is seen as one of the best young talents in Sweden, but Åslund is of the belief he would end up in a top team in the Netherlands or Belgium.

“I think he will be a very good national team player. I think he ends up in a top team in the Benelux and there he can become the GOAT [Greatest of all time],” he said.

“Will he replace James Maddison at Tottenham? I hope I’m wrong and that he does, but I don’t think so. People take what I say the wrong way, Lucas is an incredible footballer.

“If you see how Bergvall plays football, he is an opportunist, he often does the difficult things.

“If you’re going to play in the Premier League and have that role, you have to check which other players have it, how many Swedish players have that role? There are extremely few, so then Lucas Bergvall must become one of the best players in Swedish history. Am I sure he will be? No, I don’t think so.”
