Idrissa Gueye’s impending move to Paris Saint Germain has dominated the transfer stories this week, with every day providing an update on the potential move.
We covered a report earlier today that stated the move was close to completion, with Gueye set for a medical in the coming days after PSG agreed to a €30m plus fee with Everton.
There’s been plenty of talk about the potential move, with some doubting whether Gueye is worth the price the Ligue 1 champions are paying.
His former manager Rene Girard is not one of those people. Girard worked with Gueye at Lille, the two spent several years together before the midfielder was snapped up by Aston Villa in 2015.
Girard has no doubts about the Senegal midfielder’s quality and is more than convinced that he will be a good signing for PSG.
“Yes, because even if the team has scavengers, like Verratti, he does not have the same volume of play as Idrissa,” he told Le Parisien when asked if Gueye will bring what PSG are missing.
“I am sure that they will be complementary and that he will quickly find his place. His qualities allow him to play recuperator or runner, or even on one side.
“He can play next to Verratti or even higher because he eliminates well. He needs confidence to be effective. When I left him, he was at the level that he still had to work.
“He will no doubt often be associated with Marco Verratti, but he can hold a sentry post without any problem. I had done it in Lille. A player like Kanté has raised his level of play as the competition has grown. Idrissa can do all that.
“He is very collective and able to give himself. I guess he will be in recovery (of the ball) because that’s where he is the best. He will do just fine, simply, without asking any questions.”
