Given some of Davy Klaassen’s comments since he joined Werder Bremen, it may be expected that he’d been desperate to leave Everton for a good few months before he did.
The Dutchman has repeatedly spoken critically about his time at Goodison Park. Clearly not a fan of some of the coaches he played under, the footballer didn’t think much of the club’s style of play or even training.
In November, Klaassen explained: “I think no one at Everton can say that I didn’t do my best. And how difficult it sometimes was. The last few months I drove to the club knowing how much it would suck.”
But an Everton departure wasn’t nailed on.
The player’s agent had said his client wanted to continue and prove himself in English football, and now Klaassen himself has said he was caught in two minds, not being sure whether to dive for the exit or stick around in the hope his situation improved.
Speaking to Voetbal International, the Werder Bremen player has made clear that the man currently in charge at Goodison helped shed some clarity on the situation: “My biggest concern was that I wasn’t sure what decision to take. My transfer to Everton was very logical, but it didn’t work out well. I therefore thought: what can I do for the best? I doubted it for two or three weeks.
‘In the run-up to the summer I also thought: I will stay with Everton, a new trainer is coming. But after three or four days, he already indicated that I could leave. That was actually good, that he was so clear from the start.”
Marco Silva’s bluntness saved the day.
