Manchester United youngster Willy Kambwala has revealed that he was once driven crazy watching the team play and not being able to be a part of it.

Kambwala has been speaking to Le Parisien about his career so far and his time at Manchester United, after making his first team debut last month.

The youngster has been at Old Trafford since a €4m move from Sochaux’s U19’s in October 2020 but has had to wait to make his mark, with a series of injuries limiting his time on the pitch.

He’s highly rated by the Red Devils, though, and after coming back from those injury issues has found himself a part of Erik Ten Hag’s team this season.

Kambwala was handed his Premier League debut in the 2-0 defeat to West Ham last month and followed that up with a one-minute appearance against Aston Villa three days later on Boxing Day and seven minutes in the FA Cup win over Wigan.

He’s very much a man to keep an eye on and he’s determined to make his mark, having made a promise to his mother that he’d play for Manchester United very early in his career.

“It may sound crazy, but when my mother made me start playing football, I made her a promise that I was going to become a professional at Manchester United when I was 16,” he said.

“Manchester is my childhood club. Since I was little, I said I was going to play there. For me, one name resonates, it’s Paul Scholes.

“I’m not going to say I have idols or a favorite player, but there are players I want to play with, and he is one of them. Problem: I didn’t anticipate him retiring.

“I want to be that guy who sets the tone. It puts a bit of pressure on me, but for me, there’s nothing worse than losing a match and thinking you didn’t give your all.

“A few years ago, I came here as a spectator with Les Ulis, and it drove me crazy to see them playing on MY field without being able to act. This time, I was there, it was me! I didn’t sleep all night.”
