Brighton and Hove Albion youngster Facundo Buonanotte has admitted he was left disappointed by the club’s decision not to release him for the U-20 World Cup.

The forward has been speaking to Telenoche about the decision from the Seagulls to reject Argentina’s plans to include him in Javier Mascherano’s squad.

The U-20 World Cup kicks off later this month and has been preceded by various nations trying to convince clubs in Europe to release players for it before the season ends.

Argentina are one of them, with their coach Javier Mascherano having recently travelled to England to negotiate with clubs.

That saw him meeting Brighton over Buonanotte, but it was quickly made apparent that he would not be made available as Roberto De Zerbi wanted him as part of his squad as they battle to qualify for Europe in the final games of the season.

That’s a decision the Brighton youngster is disappointed about, admitting as much in a conversation with Telenoche.

“It was very sad,” he said.

“An ugly feeling because I did everything possible to be there. When it was confirmed, I was very sad, but these are things that happen.

“The club had said yes to me, but when they contacted the team, they expressed that they wanted to release me with the tournament already started, but that could not be done.”
