For one whole season, Daniel Cousin was a Rangers player.
In that period, the former Gabon international left a vivid impression in the mind of the Ibrox faithful, scoring twice against Celtic and helping them reach the final of the Europa League, which they ended up losing to Zenit St-Petersburg.
Scoring 13 goals and assisting another three in 40 appearances, the striker did the job he was asked to do, but then Hull City came knocking with promise of Premier League football.
Barely making a profit, Rangers reluctantly let him leave after just one year, and it’s a move the now assistant manager at FC Côte Bleue regrets making.
Speaking to the YouTube channel Costa Bordino, the 43-year-old opened up about his time at Rangers, and spoke of his exit.
He said: “Yeah, it’s a regret. I chose the financial side to the football one. I was told when I was young to prioritise the football over the financial, but I was already a certain age. These days, they all go to Qatar or China. It’s true that you have the love of the shirt, but you also play or your family.
“Yeah, I regretted it because the manager didn’t want me to leave, and the year after they’re champions. They bring in El-Hadji Diouf, and they’re champions. We came second, but we’d gone the whole way in Europe, which Celtic didn’t, so yeah, it’s a regret. I could have made better choices. Maybe I was sometimes badly surrounded, but it goes so quickly, and sometimes you have to make choices”.
Following his move to Hull City from Rangers, where he stayed for two years, Cousin went to AE Larisa in Greece, before returning to his native Gabon to play for FC Sapins for three years.
He has since returned to France, where tried his hand at managing in the regional leagues before taking up his role as assistant manager for Mohamed Sadani in National 3 with FC Côte Bleue.
