Liverpool are ‘very enthusiastic’ about what may be set to come from January signing Cody Gakpo after being impressed since his arrival from PSV Eindhoven.

That’s according to former Reds goalkeeper Sander Westerveld, who says he has only heard ‘positive reports’ from around Anfield regarding the forward.

Gakpo joined Liverpool in a €42m deal from PSV at the beginning of January after months of speculation about his future after starring in the Netherlands in the last few years.

He had managed 55 goals and 50 assists in 159 games for PSV since his debut in the Eredivisie in February 2018, the kind of numbers that led to increased interest in him from the Premier League.

He nearly moved there in the summer but instead ended up at Liverpool in January, with the Reds moving ahead of the competition as part of a refresh of their forward line.

The Dutchman has struggled to replicate his numbers from the Netherlands since his arrival, with just four goals in 17 games so far, but Westerveld says there are no concerns from inside the club.

“It’s (the false nine) a new position for him, at PSV he played on the left,” PSV Fans report him saying.

“I only hear positive reports about him left and right from the club. He does what is asked of him and he does it well.

“Like a false nine, he gets into the ball, he turns with his technique, he can get away at speed himself or give a cross ball. Sure, they want him to score more, but like against Manchester United a few weeks ago, it went fantastically.”
