Southampton’s Wesley Hoedt has spent the last 18 months on loan at Celta Vigo and Royal Antwerp after he failed to find his way into Ralph Hasenhüttl’s plans at St Mary’s.
The centre-back has two more years left on his contract with the Saints.
Speaking to Het Nieuwsblad at the end of last month, the 26-year-old expressed his desire to leave the Premier League club.
The Netherlands international even confirmed there’s interest in him, but refused to provide any details.
Hoedt played alongside Ritchie De Laet at the Belgium club last season, who has now shared some hints on the player’s future.
The former Manchester United and Leicester City defender has had two spells with Royal Antwerp. De Laet has given a lengthy interview to Het Nieuwsblad and was asked if Hoedt, like him, can have a another spell with the Jupiler Pro League side.
“Aaah, Wes! My roomie. (Smiles) He misses us, eh, and I miss him too. I’m curious what he’s going to do. He’s still looking for a club and I think he really wants to come back,” De Laet said.
“Of course, he can also go higher up again [to a top league], but he is only 26. He could play here in Europe [Royal Antwerp qualified for the Europa League] and take that step next year. Or, if Antwerp really becomes a super power, just stay. But it now remains to be seen how far he and the club want to go.”
The Dutchman has publicly spoken against Southampton’s manager, and this would reduce his chances of entering Hasenhüttl’s plans for next season.
With Hoedt wanting to leave the English side, it remains to be seen whether or not Royal Antwerp will sign him again this summer.
Hoedt made 25 appearances in all competitions for the Belgium club.
