There are a couple of main sides to the Spanish media, with the Catalan press being very much in favour of Barcelona.
Sport and Mundo Deportivo are the two Catalonia based sports newspapers and whilst they have versions in other regions, which don’t tend to be as biased, there are few things the Barcelona orientated newspapers like more than bad news for Real Madrid.
Therefore, Arsenal beating Real Madrid 3-0 on Tuesday evening has been grasped. Declan Rice is especially seen as something of a hero after this two excellent free kicks set the tie alight.
Sport have an article which states that after the match, Rice’s move from West Ham United to Arsenal is ‘the cheapest €116m in history’. They say he ‘converted two impossible free kicks’ and has earned himself a place in the Gunners’ ‘Hall of Fame’.
Indeed, his performance is described as ‘worthy of the best Thierry Henry in front of a desperate Santiago Bernabéu’.
The Catalan newspaper insist Rice will ‘never again’ be dismissed as a somewhat boring defensive midfielder, and the whole thing is presented as somewhat career changing.
Now Arsenal have to make sure they don’t fail in the second leg leg at the Bernabéu… when all eyes will be on Declan Rice.
