Back in February, we covered a surprise claim from Germany which stated Leeds United are looking at Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Julian Weigl.

On March 22nd, the defensive midfielder stated he’s happy at the club when responding to the Leeds links.

Transfermarkt have had a detailed chat with Daniel Farke, where they asked about signing his ‘former protégé’ for Leeds.

The manager spent a year at Gladbach before joining the Whites in July 2023. During his time with the Bundesliga club, they signed the 29-year-old on loan from Benfica.

Weigl made 24 appearances under Farke’s orders at Mönchengladbach, and the latter is well aware of his qualities. The manager has refused to confirm or deny Leeds’ interest in his former player.

“Julian is a great footballer and person. He could enrich many teams with his qualities,” he said.

“My focus at this stage of the season, however, is entirely on our current squad and getting the best out of the team.”

Gladbach made the Germany international’s stay permanent after Farke’s exit and offered him a contract until 2028. A potential deal remains difficult considering the player’s recent comments.

Meanwhile, Farke was asked about Wilfried Gnonto’s development at Leeds and whether he can make the jump to ‘international elite’ in the future.

“Wilfried Gnonto has developed tremendously. Like almost every young player, he still has room for improvement, especially in terms of consistency in his performances,” Farke explained.

“I can imagine where many players could go, but ultimately, it’s up to the boys to make it happen.”

The Whites coach has heaped praise on Joël Piroe, who managed 15 goals and six assists in the Championship this season.

“Joël has been outstanding this season, his efficiency in front of goal makes him a key player for us,” he added.
