Mario Gotze to Liverpool at one time felt like a transfer rumour which would never die.
Even before Jurgen Klopp arrived at Anfield, the rumours had been around, so with the former Borussia Dortmund manager making the move to Liverpool, everything got a little out of hand.
There felt a reasonable possibility that Gotze could leave Bayern Munich for a move to Anfield, but instead the World Cup winner returned to Dortmund, where he’s had a difficult time since.
A thyroid issue has held the player back and kept him out of the game for some time, but Gotze insists he’s now fully recovered and is ready to kick on.
In an interview with Germany’s Bild, Goyze was asked which of his former coaches he’d wanted to triumph in the Champions League clash between Liverpool and Manchester City: Klopp or Guardiola.
“It was generally a great thing in the first and second leg. I played and trained under both and found it impressive to see both. That’s why it was so interesting who would win out in the end… To be honest, I was more pleased that Kloppo won.”
“Every now and then (Klopp gives Gotze tips), but I think he’s too far away now. Everyone has their own situation and we are in two different leagues. The exchange is there, but there is no concrete content. It’s not like he’s personally coming to my game from afar.”
On Liverpool potentially winning the competition, Gotze answered: “The chance to win the Champions League is definitely here. That Liverpool would have beaten City in such a way, probably only Kloppo and a few would have believed. But semifinals and finals are again a different calibre. It’s going to be exciting and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for him.”
Just wait until Mario Gotze is back to his best, then the rumours will start again.
