It’s fair to say Lothar Matthaus has always been crictical of Mesut Ozil, despite always rating the player highly. Matthaus thinks that Ozil is a great footballer, but frequently asks for more from the player, feeling there’s something missing.
In this week’s edition of German magazine Kicker, Matthaus gives Ozil credit for helping Arsenal finish 2nd in the Premier League, saying: “Ozil had a significant role in ensuring that Arsenal finished second.”
That was meant positively, but Matthaus asked for more: “I feel he lacks temperament. There’s still room for improvement.”
In October 2015, Matthaus said Ozil should be dropped for Euro 2016: “My line of front three looks like this: right Bellarabi, left Reus and central Götze. There is no place for Mesut Özil. His achievements are mixed.
“Sometimes, he is world class, other times he disappears completely.”
It will always be the case with Ozil, some feel he gives everything he can and those aroiund him need to do more, and others think there’s more to come.
