When Taiwo Awoniyi returned to Liverpool from his loan spell from Royal Excel Mouscron in the summer, there was a bit of a tug of war for his services.

KAA Gent were the eventual victors, and there was genuine excitement about what the forward could do for them over the current campaign.

However, things don’t always go to plan, and it’s fair to say the Nigeria U23 international has been a bit of a flop for the Belgian side, to an extent where they wouldn’t mind if his loan was cut short in January.

This is what HLN are reporting on Friday, claiming it’s entirely up to the player what his future is made of.

If he ‘absolutely wants’ to stay with Gent, then that’s what will happen, but if he decides to go elsewhere, there is ‘concrete interest’ from Turkey for his services.

HLN see this as the ‘most obvious solution’ for the 21-year-old, who has yet to find the back of the net for Gent in the Jupiler Pro League despite featuring 16 different times for them in the competition.

A far cry from the seven in 27 he managed for Mouscron last year, which also included five assists.
